Why Masonry Repairs are Important
We owe some of the best architectural feats to proper masonry work. We can appreciate old structures because they were built to stand the test of time. However, no matter how impeccably built, structures do need some maintenance. They are constantly subject to natural elements and their quality will change over time. That is why masonry repairs are important - to preserve the longevity of existing structures. Not only is it dangerous to ignore structural problems, but it would also be a waste of the efforts of workers who have toiled over it from years ago. It is also worth noting that masonry repair should not be purely reactive. You do not have to wait for damage before you take action. In most cases, it is best to do some preventive measures to keep repair costs to a minimum.
The Issues That We Most Commonly Deal With:
Bulging
Moisture is one of masonry’s natural enemies. Water can warp bricks and concrete, which will cause them to bulge out instead of staying uniformly flat. To address this issue, our team will have to determine the water source (cause of the problem) and keep it from seeping in. They will then restore the surface of the brick that has started to jut out.
Crumbling Mortar
Mortar is a paste that binds bricks together. Over time, this substance will start to wear down. As a result, the blocks will start to buckle. If neglected, since there is no longer a buffer between the bricks anymore, they will start getting loose. All that negative space also makes room for moisture. To address this issue, we perform a technique called tuckpointing where we replace all the deteriorated mortar.
Efflorescence
When concrete is constantly exposed to moisture, it has to tendency to form a film of white powder on its surface. To keep this from happening, our masons will have to find the source of the moisture and apply a sealant onto the surface of the concrete. If left untreated, this white steaks that can be easily washed off with water can lead to stains, which are much harder to remove. In a lot of cases, heavily stained concrete has to be replaced entirely.
Vertical Corner Cracks
All foundations have a settling period. If made incorrectly, you will start to notice cracks in the walls. Over time, these cracks will get more noticeable, which proves that there is indeed an underlying problem with the foundation. The entire structure is mostly likely going to be prone to water damage and misalignment. If addressed right away, this is a fairly simple problem to fix. All we would have to do is reinforce the crack by injecting epoxy into them. If left untreated, these cracks can expand and lead to bigger, more costly problems.
Compacted Bricks
A compacted brick is a lot like a chink in a chain. One damaged brick can compromise the integrity of the entire wall or brick chimney. A brick get compacted due to pressure and corrosion. The added pressure can create holes and cracks that leave room for unwanted elements. Oftentimes, one compacted brick can multiply because the surrounding bricks will have to compensate for that weak spot. These bricks have to be replaced right away to prevent further damage. A lot of our clients worry about finding bricks that will match their existing walls. You do not have to worry about that. We will do our best to source, if not the exact match, the closest matched brick to make the repair completely unnoticeable.
